For the 2% of people who read this and care to hear the birth story, here it goes. If not, scroll to the bottom and you can see some more pics!
We were scheduled to be induced on Thursday the 20th since I was already 3cm and he was projected to be about 8.5 lbs. We arrived at the hospital bright and early at 5 am which was probably about 1.5 hours too early. We basically spent all of that time going through questions and paperwork that they should have already had on file, oh well. We got my IV in place around 7am and they started me on a pitocin drip around 7:30 and by 8 when Dr. S arrived I was at a 4. She broke my water (which hurt a wee bit more than I expected since I had already had my epidural in place with Ryan before anything relating to labor happened with him). My nurse asked when I would like to call in the anesthesiologist for my epidural and not sure why I hesitated, but I did for all of 1 minute before I said, um NOW. I was definitely having "real" contractions which I had never felt before and I did not like them one bit. They were coming every 2.5 minutes and it was INTENSE. The anesthesiologist got there around 9 and trying to time him putting the needle in with my contractions was tough, not to mention he was probably on the verge of retiring and moved at a snail's pace. He missed the mark the first time which was pretty irritating, but he got it the second time, thank goodness. Once he left, I kept waiting for it to start taking effect. After 30 minutes, we realized it still wasn't taking so I hit the button for more. By about 9:45, still NOTHING. By this point I was on the verge of screaming, the contractions were so painful. Luckily my nurse had the good sense to bring in another anesthesiologist to check out the situation. He got there around 10 and his first question was asking me my height. Once I told him, he was shocked by how little medication I was given, so he doubled the dose and within 15 minutes, I was nice and numb. Our parents arrived by about 10:30 which was a good thing since I was not very pleasant to be around until about that time. I think my nurse checked me again around then and I was about 6-7cm. At this point they still couldn't tell if he was sunny side up like Ryan, but she said that usually you won't progress if they are turned the wrong way and since I was, she thought I should be in the clear (which was definitely the case with Ryan). We sat around and talked for a bit and all I could think about was how starved I was and wanted him out so I could eat!! Dr. S came during her lunch hour to check me and around noon she told me I was "complete" but that he was sunny side up so she was going to get a table. Wes and I weren't too sure what she meant. We thought she was bringing something in to help shift my body to make him turn to which she quickly replied, "No, you're about to have a baby, you're ready. We'll just turn him while you push." We were shocked and I think I was in disbelief. Wes went and told our parents what was about to happen and when he got back, we began! I couldn't feel a thing because my epidural was still so fresh, so when they told me to push, I was laughing because I didn't think anything was happening. Well, 2 contractions, 6 pushes, and 8 minutes later, he came out screaming! They were able to get him to flip on the first push, but since he came so quickly, there was some fluid in his lungs. They wiped him down, let me hold him for about 2 minutes and took him to be monitored in the nursery for a bit. When he came back, they said he was perfectly healthy and that he was hungry. He ate like a champ right away and we were in love :)
Penny left to go get Ryan and bring him up to the hospital to meet his brother. He wasn't too impressed at first considering our parents were there as well as my brother and sister-n-law, so he thought it was playtime!
He was, however, very excited about his new garbage truck that Bradley got him :)
My dad went and got us sandwiches and I think my Firehouse Sub tasted better than anything else I've ever had in my life! We visited with our family for a bit and that evening Wes and I enjoyed some Cheddars to go, my fave!
First pic with his eyes open!
I felt pretty good the entire time we were at the hospital which was a complete 180 from Ryan. In fact, the whole experience was different this time around. We opted to have Bradley sleep in the nursery both nights and the nurses just brought him in to eat and would whisk him away! He did great with eating and sleeping, the nurses would have to wake him to eat every 3-4 hours. The hospital delivered 9 babies the day before and 8 the day Bradley was born (they only have 10 rooms), so due to overcrowding we had to stay in our L&D room the first night. The next morning, they asked if I wanted to go home, in which I quickly replied NO. I wanted my full 48 hours of around the clock care :) My mom brought Ryan back up on Friday and during the time they were there, Bradley was in the nursery recovering from his circumcision. So we all admired him from the windows, and when Bradley started crying, Ryan became very upset and wanted me to go in there and pick him up. Apparently, it made such an impression on him, he was very upset about it that night and wanted to discuss it further. A few close friends came by to meet B the second day, and by Saturday morning we were ready to go home.
We are so in love with our newest bundle of joy. We take him tomorrow for his 2 week check-up, so I will update again later this week with a recap of our first days at home :)
